The Clever Badger I'm not dead yet!

An Autumn Project

I enjoy watching movies.  Some, such as comedies, I think are better watched in a group.  Others, like introspective foreign films almost demand to be watched alone.  Almost all films deserve some commentary.

Writing the Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus review was a lot of fun for me, so I think I'll try to write more posts like that.  I have several films in mind to review, including an unusual Hong Kong action/fantasy film called Fung wan:  Hung ba tin ha.

I thought it might be interesting, though, if one or both of my regular readers would suggest some films for me to review.   So as not to contaminate the process much, I'm don't want to put too many restrictions on this, but there are a couple:

  1. No porn.  Not gonna happen.
  2. No huge blockbuster films.  Not that The Dark Knight wasn't a great film - it was, but everyone and their brother has reviewed these.
  3. October is reserved for horror films.
  4. Nobody gets to whine if I say their favorite film stinks like old socks.  My reviews, my opinions.

So, without further delay, let's have some suggestions!

  1. Well, if you had the intestinal fortitude to watch Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus, then see if you can handle Snow Queen. Actually, I think you could find your fill of bad horror films on Chiller, the place where even bad SyFy channel movies can find a home.

I'll look for more, if you want

  2. Reserving horror movies for October kind of hamstrings most of my possible suggestions. I happen to know that you're a huge "Deliverance" nut, so why take a whack at that one?

    • You've got it backward. October is reserved for horror movies, meaning that I'm going to review only horror movies in October, but I may also review horror movies at other times.

Most folks only find Deliverance interesting for Ned Beatty's scene with the hillbilly. I'll review that right here: Gut wrenching, violent, and it totally justifies everything the protagonists do in the rest of the film.

  3. How about the Postman, with Kevin Costner? Was it really as bad as all that? I have to admit, I kind of liked both the film and the book — it didn't spend time on the 'how' of a post-apocalyptic US came to pass. I haven't watched it post-2001; wonder if I'd like it more or less now.

  4. I saw the Hangover with a group of 40-somethings. Our small group comprised half the audience. Raunchy, but darn funny in places — we were still chuckling days later.

  5. I'm not sure what I should recommend since almost anything I'd recommend would be films I'm considering reviewing in retaliation for your having to read a review of Mega Shark v. Giant Octopus. I will however, make the following suggestions: "Evil Behind You" "The Mothman Prophecies" "Haeckel's Tale". All of these would fit well in October. (Although should note that Haeckel's Tale while not porn does have a completely disgusting and unecessary zombie sex scene).

    • I've got no particular problem with the odd sex scene here and there – it's not as if I'd go into excruciating detail about them.

I think I may have a winner if I can locate "Evil Behind You". It's impressive 1.4 out of 10 rating at IMDB shows promise.

  6. Further research indicates the title is “Ice Queen.”

Having attempted to view it, I would put it in the category of “not even improved by watching it in fast forward.”

  7. If you want a horror suggestion, try MOTEL HELL. We went through a horror phase in college, renting videos for the common room. Motel Hell was my choice once. My friends still give me grief about it. Two things stand out: 1) A cheesy hand would appear on the screen at the most graphic moments obscuring the kill and 2) the proprieter’s tagline – ‘Meat’s meat and a man’s got to eat!’. Twenty years later, they still won’t let me pick a movie!
