Haiti Relief
On 12 January, 2010, a magnitude 7.o earthquake struck Haiti.
On 20 January, 2010, a magnitude 6.1 aftershock struck.
Estimates of the number of dead range up to 200,000.
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, and will need tremendous assistance from the international community to dig out and rebuild following these devastating catastrophes.
Among the most important relief assets needed right now are food, clean water, medicine, and medical care.
Two very relevant organizations operating in the area right now are Doctors Without Borders and the Red Cross.
Please give what you can.

I’m struck that I never hear the Dominican Republic, its airfields, ports etc. mentioned in the relief effort. It’s like the two countries don’t share an island. Kind of weird.

I’ve wondered about this, too. The only mention at all I’ve seen about it was in an article about a local Kentucky group heading to Haiti to help, and they considered going in through the D.R., but determined that moving supplies overland across the mountains would be more time consuming than going straight into Haiti.

It’s apparently the case that many aid flights that were unable to land at the Port-au-Prince airport in the early days of the crisis ended up landing in the DR and transporting their supplies overland.
Most of what I’ve heard concerning the Dominican Republic throughout the crisis has centered on the DR’s fears that there would be an uncontrollable tide of (potentially economically destabilizing) refugees flooding in from Haiti.
